Basal Alignment Project (BAP)
Anchorage School District, along with many other districts across the country, adopted the Basal Alignment Project (BAP) for the 2014-2015 school year. The BAP is aligned to the new Common Core English Language Arts State Standards (CCSS) and was created by educators to better prepare students for reading and writing in the real world. Rather than focus on connections as they read, students are now being asked to answer comprehension questions with evidence from the text, called text dependent questions. We are still using the same Houghton Mifflin Language Arts reading material (e.g., weekly stories); however, the comprehension questions and culminating activities have been replaced by the BAP.
In my class, students have "Reading Response Books (RRB)," in which they answer BAP questions daily about our story of the week. Students have been instructed to write their answers in question-answer format, using the phrases from the question to formulate the beginning of their answer to ensure they write complete, descriptive sentences. They must also use evidence from the text in order to support their answers.
I was fortunate enough to be a part of the process of creating the BAP curriculum during the summer of 2014. I am confident that this new project will prepare students for real life reading and writing opportunities throughout their education.
